Our Story

If that table could talk…

How many of our most impactful and innovative ideas are generated around a table in that moment when the greatest need presents? In 1997, a kitchen table was the setting from which three local women put their hearts and minds together to serve a friend living under the threat of domestic violence. The resources for survivors were simply not there, and their ideas from that table have been talking ever since by filling gaps through providing Help, Healing, and Hope.

Working to Fill Gaps

The example these three women tirelessly provided continues to shine. By securing the support of local and state government, business leaders, foundations, collaborative partners, and most importantly – survivor voices, we continue to use their original support model to fulfill our mission to end domestic and sexual violence in our communities.

Then, Now, and Beyond.

Within two years of meeting at that kitchen table, Safe Passage, Inc. was incorporated and granted not-for-profit status, a 24/7 crisis Helpline was created, and a governing Board of committed local citizens established a service region.

Today, our service region includes Dearborn, Franklin, Jefferson, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland Counties. Our passionate Board and dedicated staff ensure that the original vision including the crisis Helpline, emergency shelter, support, and outreach is complimented with the innovations of mobile advocacy, emergency medical/law enforcement response, survivor peer connections, and holistic health and wellness supports. The legacy and spirit captured around that original kitchen table is stronger than ever.

One of the original founders of the organization serves as an Honorary Board Member and one of the original agency Advocates was named Executive Director in 2022. Every member of our agency plays a critical role in our mission by sustaining and creating innovative award-winning programs and services that help build healthy relationships and communities. There is still much work to be done. We feel incredibly honored to learn from and serve survivors.
